This post has been a long time coming! We started planning this new contruction cottage in Haliburton for my clients back in early 2021. My clients had already worked with their builder on the actual structural desing for the cottage and brough me on to help out with selecting all the aesthetic elements. Keeping reading to see how we kept costs down by designing a semi-custom Ikea Kitchen.

The Inspiration

The architecture of the cottage was leaning modern. Simple straight lines, with soaring ceilings leading up to massive windows to showcase a stunning view of the lake. We choose a darker pallette for the exterior. Horizontal black siding was applied to the upper level and we used a vertical board & batten siding for the lower level to break up the sight lines. Cedar elements to add to the natural modern vibe in the soffits and the deck. Copper light fixtures for the exterior were added for pop. Below are the inspiration images from the Design Plan

We pulled inspiration for the interior from the natural surroundings of the new cottage. Lots of greenery and wood toned elements. We choose a sage green cabinetry and a wood grained island, with gold toned hardware and more pops of copper.

Kitchen Details

To keep costs down the homeowners choose to go with a semi-custom Ikea Kitchen. All cabinetry frames and interiors are from Ikea’s Sektion cabinet system. The green cabinet fronts are Ikea’s Bodarp style. They are a matte finish, flat slab door profile. For the island we choose Mistral from Kitch. Kitch manufacture’s cabinet door fronts that work seamlessly with Ikea’s Sektion & Godmorgan cabinetry. They also make floating shelves which we used in this kitchen instead of upper cabinetry on either side of the sink.

The oversized island is great for this open concept space and an entertainer’s dream. This space is the is truly multi-purpose. Anyone with a cottage knows how multi-faceted these rooms need to be. Invite a couple of families up and suddenly kids are playing board games at the dining room while someone else is relaxing by the fire reading a book. Having an extra large island with lots of seating was key to maximizing the functionality of the kitchen.

The homeowners styled the living and dining areas with pieces they already owned, infusing their personality and charm into the space. The result is a cozy and welcoming hang out spot for the whole family. Kudos to the homeowners for also diy-ing this millwork front hall mudroom space 👏

I am thrilled with the way this project turned out, but the real star is that view! Feeling like your fully immersed in nature with all the modern amenities at your disposable is the way I like to cottage lol. Thank you to the home owners for choosing to work with me and for graciously allowing myself and my husband to stay the night to get this shoot done!
